Kerala Tourism has been awarded the esteemed Responsible Tourism Global Award at the World Travel Mart in London. At the award ceremony in London, state tourism minister PA Mohammed Riyas accepted it on behalf of the tourism department and lauded it as a boost for Kerala's tourism industry.

The honour was granted for the STREET project, which was undertaken by the Kerala government's Responsible Tourism Mission.

On Tuesday, Riyas stated in a video message, "I would like to share with you with the utmost pride that the state's responsible tourism programme and the tourism department have won the award for the water STREET project. Street is the acronym for Sustainable, Tangible, Responsible, Experiential, Ethnic, and Tourism Hubs, and this was implemented on March 31, this year."

The "street" initiative is a concept for the tourism industry that involves public involvement and aims to protect and conserve water.

According to the minister, the jury expressed particular interest in the water street project carried out at Maravanthuruthu in the Kottayam district.

The tourist administration stated that the project's goal is to clean and deepen the canals and other waterbodies for the benefit of tourism-related activities. The banks of waterbodies are covered with eco-friendly coir cloth as part of this project.

The so-called "Coir Bhoovastra" is a natural earth cover formed of coconut fibre that will prevent erosion during the monsoon season.

A source from the tourism department told PTI that kayaking has also been introduced in various locations.

P.B. Nooh, director of tourism, and K. Rupesh Kumar, coordinator of the Responsible Tourism Mission, were in attendance with the minister.
