Chinese broadcaster CCTV reports that at least 65 people have been confirmed dead following the earthquake that struck China's Sichuan province on Monday.

State media reported that aftershocks continued to be felt on Tuesday, a day after the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck the area southwest of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, at around 1 p.m. on Monday.

248 injuries have so far been reported, and at least 12 people are still missing, reported state media.

The epicentre of the earthquake, according to the USGS, was located about 43 kilometres (27 miles) southeast of the city of Kangding, which has a population of about 100,000. According to the report, moderate tremors were felt by more than a million nearby residents after the earthquake.

Images from the earthquake appeared to show entire buildings collapsing into piles of bricks and wooden beams, severely damaging some homes.

The State Council of China reported that on Monday, China initiated a Level 3 emergency response and sent rescuers to Luding County. According to Chinese broadcaster CGTN, rescuers are assisting in the clearing of landslide-caused roadblocks.

Before the devastating earthquake, Sichuan, a province of 84 million people, was already going through a very difficult summer. The province has experienced drought and some of the worst heatwaves in the past 60 years over the past two months.

The Longmenshan Fault, which runs through the mountains of Sichuan, makes the landlocked region vulnerable to earthquakes.

One of the most devastating earthquakes to ever hit China was the 7.9-magnitude one that struck Sichuan in 2008. Cities more than 1,450 kilometres (900 miles) away from the epicentre felt the tremors and nearly 90,000 people were killed.
