Safdarjung Hospital becomes the 1st govt. hospital to perform robotic kidney transplant

Even though the escalating cost of consumables used during such surgeries could reach Rs. 100,000, the recovery time is reduced from weeks to days.

The 39-year-old patient, a resident of Farrukabad in Uttar Pradesh, underwent the first robotic kidney transplant surgery at Safdarjung Hospital, a government hospital in New Delhi. The man was constantly on dialysis and had been awaiting a kidney transplant for years. His wife, who is 34, donated the kidney. Both the recipient and donor were doing well after the surgery on Wednesday.

The surgery was performed through a keyhole rather than a lengthy incision of 10 to 12 cm, which increases the risk of infection, hernia, and other complications, according to Dr. Anup Kumar, the surgeon in charge. "It helps in operating upon complicated cases. This is the first such surgery in a government hospital in the country, and in the private sector also, only about four hospitals are operating robotically, " says Kumar.

Kumar referred to the operation as a turning point in the history of Safdarjung Hospital. According to Kumar, "Robotic renal transplant is the most technically challenging surgery in urology. It requires excellent expertise in robotics as well as renal transplant surgery. However, not all patients are suitable for undergoing minimally invasive surgery, and we will be selecting patients on a case-to-case basis."

Even though the escalating cost of consumables used during such surgeries could reach Rs. 100,000, the recovery time is reduced from weeks to days. "Since it is on a case-to-case basis, there is always a possibility of getting a waiver if a patient is not able to bear the cost," Kumar explained.
